Abstract

Gendered or non-gendered toys? Parents’ representations of children’s gender, their impact on behavior, and marketing implications

This article examines the link between parents’ representations of their children’s gender and their behaviors toward toys. 31 in-depth interviews identified four ideal types of parents (traditional, shared, neutral, feminist), showing that, for some, gender is not a central issue, while for others it is decisive, whether they are in favor of stereotypical toys or, conversely, transgender toys. These results suggest a more refined market segmentation and a societal responsibility for marketing professionals.
